SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior defender
Kylie Gazza was named the Southern Conference's Defensive Player of the Week when the league released its weekly soccer awards Tuesday afternoon.
Gazza was part of a back line that opened the season with a pair of shutouts, blanking Jacksonville State (2-0) and Rice (1-0), both on the road. The Cumming, Ga., native played all 180 minutes in the two contests, and even contributed one of the team's two goals in the win at Jacksonville State.
Gazza is coming off an outstanding junior season in 2021. She was named first team All-SoCon and the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year after helping lead the Bulldogs to an eighth-straight SoCon regular-season championship, the SoCon Tournament title and a first-round NCAA Tournament win at Auburn.
Samford (2-0) will host the Murray State Racers (0-2) Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. Admission to the game is free.
