BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team opened Southern Conference play with a 1-0 loss to The Citadel Friday night at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the loss, Samford falls to 4-3-3 overall and 0-1 in SoCon play. The Citadel improves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in league action. This was Samford's first Southern Conference regular season loss since Oct. 13, 2019, when the Bulldogs fell at Mercer, 1-0. The last home SoCon regular season loss came in 2014 in a 3-1 setback to ETSU.
The teams played scoreless through the first half of action. The Citadel's Suzuka Yosue scored the game's lone goal off an assist from Zoey Conrad in the 72
nd minute of the match, giving The Citadel a 1-0 advantage.
As a team, Samford had 16 shots, to nine for The Citadel. The home Bulldogs had six shots on goal to just two for the visitors. Each team had two corner kicks in the contest.
Samford will play host to the Mercer Bears Sunday afternoon. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start from Shauna Yelton Field and admission is free.
