AUBURN, Ala. - The 25th-ranked Samford Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker to No. 21 West Virginia, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
The lone goal of the game came when the Mountaineers' Lauren Segalla scored with just 64 seconds left on the clock, leaving the Bulldogs stunned.
It's the first loss for Samford in nearly a calendar year, with the Bulldogs' last loss coming on September 16, 2021 to Texas in double overtime. The loss drops Samford's record to 3-1-2.
Samford had more than its share of chances, especially in the first half. The Bulldogs forced West Virginia keeper Kayza Massey to make four first-half saves, including a breakaway from
Layton Glisson and a shot from
Nikki Bario that seemed destined to find the back of the net.
The Bulldogs had several addition chances in the second half, including a shot from
Taylor Yount that rang off the post, and a header from
Layla Brown that went wide.
Overall, the Mountaineers outshot the Bulldogs, 13-11, with both teams registering four shots on goal. Yount led the Bulldogs in shots with three, including two on goal.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound on Thursday evening, when they travel down I65 to meet their crosstown rivals, UAB. Kickoff from PNC Field is set for 7 p.m. Samford will then return home on Sunday, September 11, when the Bulldogs host Auburn at 5 p.m.
