Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bulldogs Erase 19-Point Deficit to Earn 75-74 Win Over Chattanooga

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior guard Bubba Parham knocked down a pair of free throws with four seconds left to help guide the Samford Men's Basketball Team to a 75-74 come-from-behind victory over Chattanooga on Saturday, after trailing by as many as 19 points in the contest.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 12-7 overall and 6-0 in conference play, marking their best start to SoCon action since joining the league in 2008. Chattanooga drops to 11-8 overall and 3-3 in SoCon play.

Logan Dye led the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points, to go along with six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Jermaine Marshall finished just one rebound shy of a double-double with a 15-point, nine-rebound effort.

Bubba Parham and A.J. Staton-McCray both scored 12 points on the night, with Staton-McCray grabbing eight rebounds. The duo combined to go 7-14 from the floor and 5-8 from three.

Jaron Rillie accounted for the fifth Bulldog to score in double figures with an 11-point performance while knocking down 3-5 shots from downtown.

Both teams tallied 12 points over the first five minutes, but Chattanooga was able to create separation with a 12-4 run over the next four minutes to take a 24-16 lead.

From there, the Mocs scored 11 of the game's next 16 points to extend their lead to 35-21 at the 5:50 mark. Chattanooga led by as many as 15 before eventually taking a 45-31 lead into the break.

The Bulldogs shot just 34 percent (11-32) from the floor over the first 20 minutes while the Mocs posted a clip of 57 percent (17-30) from the floor, highlighted by a mark of 41 percent (7-17) from three.

The Mocs' 19-point lead came with 14:48 to play following a jumper from Dalvin White that gave them a 55-36 advantage. The Bulldogs slowly chipped away from there, outscoring Chattanooga 17-5 over the next four minutes to trail just 60-53 following a three by Marshall with 10:21 to go.

Samford finally erased its colossal deficit when a ferocious slam by Marshall at the 5:58 mark made it 66-all. The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead for the first time in the half just one possession later, on a Marshall driving layup to give them a 68-67 advantage.

The game saw four tied scored and six lead changes over the final four minutes, with a dunk by Randy Brandy with 17 seconds left giving the Mocs a 74-73 lead. A Marshall layup on the ensuing possession fell off the mark, but a hustle rebound by Parham resulted in him drawing a foul to get to the line for the eventual game-winning free throws.

The Bulldogs used a 48 percent (12-25) shooting effort in the second half to finish the game at 40 percent (23-57) on field goals. Samford shot 34 percent (10-29) from the three-point line and 70 percent (19-27) from the charity stripe.

The Bulldogs once again minimized the turnovers, conceding just seven while dishing out 12 assists. The Samford defense forced 12 Chattanooga turnovers that led to 10 points.

Saturday's contest featured 12 lead changes and 11 tied scores.

The Men's Basketball Team will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 when they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to take on ETSU at 6:00 p.m. (CST).
