Men’s Tennis Picks Up First Win Of 2023, 5-2 Over Alabama State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned its first win of the 2023 spring season, downing Alabama State, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.

With the win, Samford improves to 1-3 on the young season. Alabama State falls to 0-4 with the loss.

Samford took the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. At No. 1, Mohammed Ali Bellalouna and Maxwell Giddens defeated David Grandinot and Sam Bajracharya, 6-0. On the No. 2 doubles court, Harrison Williams and Santiago Arredondo earned a 6-3 win over Juan Rodriguez and Ruan Du Preez.

In singles, the Bulldogs earned wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 to earn the 5-2 win. At No. 1 singles, Bellalouna defeated Grandinot, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. On the No. 2 singles court, Giddens picked up a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 win over Preez.

At No. 3 singles, J.B. Pickard defeated Bajracharya, 7-5, 6-2. On the No. 6 court, Will Gray earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Rodriguez.

Samford will next host South Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 4. The match is set for a 4 p.m. start from the Samford Tennis Center.
