Samford And ETSU Battle To 1-1 Draw

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer and the ETSU Bucs batted to a 1-1 draw in a key Southern Conference game Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
 
With the result, the two teams remain tied for second place in the Southern Conference with one game left with identical 5-1-2 league records. Samford is now 9-3-5 overall, while ETSU's overall record moved to 9-2-5. Western Carolina sits in first place in the league with a SoCon record of 7-1, and the Catamounts clinched the regular-season title with their 4-0 win over VMI Sunday.
 
Samford got on the scoreboard first on an own goal in the eighth minute of the game, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. ETSU's Ava Matherne knotted the score at 1-1 with her goal in the 59th minute of the contest.
 
As a team, Samford had 12 shots to 10 for ETSU. The Bulldogs tallied 10 corner kicks, to just four for the Bucs. Mary Raymond led Samford in shots with four. Sinoxolo Cesane led ETSU with five shots. Samford goalkeeper Zoe Clevely had three saves, while ETSU's Ashton Blair saved four shots.
 
Samford will wrap up its regular season with a home game against Chattanooga next Sunday, Oct. 21. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start from Shauna Yelton Field.
