Volleyball Tops UNCG, 3-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford Volleyball team salvaged the weekend with a 3-1 Southern Conference win at UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 10-12 overall and 5-5 in SoCon play. UNCG falls to 1-20 overall and 0-10 in league action.
 
Gracie Lynn Butler logged her seventh double-double of the season in the win, finishing with 13 kills and 12 digs while posting a .367 attack percentage. Kaleigh Meritt smashed a game-high 17 kills in addition to recording seven digs and hitting .441.
 
Sophia Plasman registered a career-high nine kills while Greer Golden added six kills, four block assists, and a .625 attack percentage.
 
Kayla Keshock distributed 26 assists on the night while also tallying a game-high five block assists. Lexi Thatcher contributed 17 assists. Kate Morgan led the Bulldogs' defensive efforts with 17 digs.
 
UNCG jumped out to a 7-2 lead in set one and eventually led 16-12 in the set. The. Bulldogs narrowed the gap with a 6-2 run that saw them take a 22-21 lead following a kill from Meritt. The Spartans responded by scoring the set's final four points to take it 25-22.
 
Samford took control of set two with a 7-0 run that gave them a 21-13 lead. From there, the Bulldogs were able to close out a set in which they hit .457 by a score of 25-16.
 
A 4-0 run by Samford in set three gave them a comfortable 13-6 lead. A 3-0 run later in the set put the Bulldogs up 19-11 before eventually giving way to a 25-16 set-three win.
 
The Bulldogs kept their momentum rolling in set four by scoring the first six points, which later turned into a 19-8 lead following a 4-0 run. From there, the Bulldogs laid claim to a 25-11 set win to take the match.

"Getting a split on the road is a good thing and seeing the teams overcome losing the first set and then putting it together shows some growth," Head Coach Keylor Chan said. "Sophia had a nice match and overall the team came together."

 
Samford compiled a .358 hitting percentage on the day, its third-highest mark this season. It also marked the eighth occasion that the Bulldogs posted 50 or more kills in a match (53).
 
The Bulldogs will return home next week for their final two matches from the Pete Hanna Center this season, beginning with a Thursday matchup with Furman at 7:00 p.m. (CST).
