Volleyball Sweeps Wofford on Senior Night

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Wofford on Friday night in its home finale for the 2023 season.
 
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 11-13 overall and 6-6 in Southern Conference play. Wofford falls to 15-7 overall and 6-5 in league play.
 
Prior to the beginning of the match, Lilly Smith, Kayla Keshock, Kate Wonus, and Audrey O'Brien were all recognized as part of Senior Night.
 
Kaleigh Meritt led a quarter of Bulldogs that recorded double-digit kills with 13, while Ally Cordes (11) Gracie Lynn Butler (10), and Greer Golden (10) all finished with 10 or more kills each. Butler recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 digs while Cordes compiled a .400 attack percentage and amassed three aces.
 
Kate Morgan led the defensive efforts with 13 digs while Annabelle Straty added seven. Keshock dished out a team-high 27 assists while Lexi Thatcher picked up 14
 
Wofford scored five of the first six points in set one, but the Bulldogs battled back to tie the set at eight following a kill from Greer Golden. Samford created separation with a 4-0 run that was capped off by a diving one-handed kill from Keshock that found the floor and gave the Bulldogs a 17-11 lead. From there, the Bulldogs were able to hang on to claim the set, 25-20.
 
The two teams exchanged points in the second set, with the score reading 15-all following a kill by Butler. The back-and-forth narrative continued all the way up to the 23rd point, with Samford getting kills from Butler and Wonus to close out the set 25-23.
 
A 3-0 run in set three put Samford up 11-7, but Wofford answered with a 3-0 run of its own to take a 13-12 lead. The Bulldogs took full control of the set with a 4-0 run that put them on top 23-16 and from there clinched the sweep with a 25-18 set-three win.
 
Samford hit over .300 for the fifth time this season, recording a .303 attack percentage for the evening. The Bulldogs hit .343 in set one, .222 in set two, and .394 in the closing set.
 
The Bulldogs will return to the court on Friday, Nov. 3 when they take on ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn. at 5:00 p.m. (CST).
