CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Samford volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 28-26) win at Chattanooga Friday evening at Maclellan Gym.
With the win, Samford improved to 14-13 overall and 9-6 in Southern Conference play. Chattanooga fell to 18-13 overall and 6-10 in league action.
Samford was led in the win by
Kaleigh Meritt with 17 kills and 12 digs.
Ally Cordes had 11 kills, while
Kate Wonus added 10 kills.
Kate Morgan had a team-high 18 digs, while
Kayla Keshock tallied 31 assists.
Chattanooga was led by Gylian Finch with 13 kills and 10 digs. Paige Gallentine added a team-high 14 digs for the Mocs.
In the first set, Samford jumped out to a 9-5 lead on a kill by Cordes. Chattanooga fought back to tie the score at 14-14. With the score tied at 16-16, Samford closed the set with a 9-3 run to take the opening set, 25-19.
With Samford leading, 7-6 in the second set, the Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run to take a 13-8 lead. Samford extended its lead to 16-10 on a kill be Meritt. The Bulldogs closed out the 25-21 win in the second set.
In the third set, Samford jumped out to a 6-3 lead on a kill by Wonus. Chattanooga fought back to tie the score at 10-10. The teams traded points for most of the rest of the set. The set went into extra points. With Samford trailing, 26-25, the Bulldogs scored the final three points on kills by Cordes and Meritt and an ace by Cordes to give Samford the 28-26 set win and the 3-0 match victory.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season by playing at Mercer on Saturday, Nov. 11. The match is set for a 5 p.m. (CT) start from Macon, Ga.
