Samford Volleyball Tops Furman To Advance in SoCon Championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. – To open the 2023 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship, the Samford volleyball team outlasted the Furman Paladins for a 3-2 (27-29, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 15-12) five-set instant classic victory.

The Bulldogs will play the winner of The Citadel/ETSU match at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday in the SoCon Championship Semifinal. Saturday's game will be streamed on ESPN+.

In the win for the defending tournament champions, All-SoCon First Team member Gracie Lynn Butler had a match-high 21 kills on the afternoon. SoCon Freshman of the Year Kaleigh Meritt added 14 of her own, while Kate Wonus rounded out the Bulldog trio with 12. Kayla Keshock paced the squad with 33 assists.

Defensively, Wonus and Greer Golden each had six blocks in the rematch of the 2022 Championship Final. Kate Morgan recorded 30 digs to help the Bulldogs into the semifinals.

In the opening set, Samford opened the match with a 4-0 run before each squad settled into trading points. The Bulldogs had Furman on the ropes late in the first set before the Paladins went on a 5-0 run that eventually led to Furman taking the set 29-27.

The back-of-fourth nature of the match continued throughout the second and third sets as Samford evened the contest with a 25-23 win before Furman regained control with a 25-21 win in the third set.

In the fourth set, the close play continued as the teams matched each other with runs of their own to set up a Bulldog 5-2 run to force a fifth and final set.

In the decisive fifth and final set, Samford flexed its tournament pedigree and sprinted out to a 7-0 advantage that at one point swelled to 12-4 Bulldogs. After tempting Furman with a potential comeback, Samford slammed the door shut with an Ally Cordes kill that won the set and the match.
