Bulldog Volleyball Knocked Off By Wofford In SoCon Championship Final

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford volleyball team fell 3-1 (10-25, 24-26, 25-23, 18-25) to the Wofford Terriers in Sunday afternoon's Southern Conference Volleyball Championship final. 
 
With the loss, The Bulldogs concluded the 2023 season with an overall record of 16-15. The Terriers will enter the NCAA tournament with a record of 23-7.
 
In the final game of her junior season, Gracie Lynn Butler paced the Bulldogs once again with a 12-kill, nine-digs and six-block performance. Kate Wonus joined Butler in double digits with 10 kills while the senior also contributed a team-high seven blocks on the afternoon.
 
Kayla Keshock accounted for a match-high 23 assists. Freshman Lexi Thatcher added 14 more of her own. Kate Morgan led the Bulldogs with a match-high 20 digs on the defensive end. 
 
Wofford came to life in front of its home crowd in the opening set as the Terriers jumped out to an early 7-0. Samford weathered the opening onslaught and made it a contest again after a Wofford attack error made it 14-7. The Terriers regained control and won the first set by a score of 25-10.
 
The second set saw more of a back-and-forth game play out as the Bulldogs opened the set on a 3-0 run following an Ally Cordes ace. The teams traded 4-0 runs in the heart of the set before a Butler kill gave Samford set point for the first time in the contest at 24-22. Wofford answered by tallying the final four points to take the set at 26-24. 
 
In the third set, the tight play continued as the two squads never saw the separation exceed more than five at any given point. Samford and Wofford exchanged blows until the Bulldogs took the lead for good thanks to a Wonus kill at 23-22. Samford eventually won the set by a score of 25-23. 
 
Samford took its last lead of the day following a Butler kill that made it 10-9 Bulldogs from there Wofford scored five of the next six points and ended the match on a 7-3 to take the set at 25-18 and the SoCon championship. 
 
The Bulldog duo of Bulter and Kate Morgan were each named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team.
