Samford Sinks Seton Hall 1-0 On Opening Day

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – To open the 2023 season, the Samford softball team swashbuckled its way to a 1-0 victory over the Seton Hall Pirates in the opening game of the Southern Miss-hosted Black & Gold Invitational on Friday. 
 
The Bulldogs only needed to plate one run to go along with Preseason Pitcher of the Year McKenzie Newcomb's performance in the circle for Samford's first win of the season. The sophomore tossed seven shutout innings while striking out a pair of Pirates and only allowing five hits on the afternoon. At the plate, Newcomb collected one of the Bulldogs' six hits on the afternoon.
 
In her first career start, Logan Champion went 3-for-3 with a double in the seventh. Champion also scored the lone Bulldog run of the day. To go along with Champion's three-hit performance, Sarah Squillace and Gwynnie Hornibrook each record a base knock in the winning effort. 
 
The lone run of the game came in the top of the fifth when Champion led off with a single to left field for her second hit of the day. She then advanced to second on a passed ball before moving up to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Ansley Yantis. 
 
With one away in the visiting half of the fifth, pinch-hitter Gwynnie Hornibrook slashed a single to left to score Champion put Samford up 1-0. 
 
Newcomb didn't allow a runner over the final two innings to secure the first Bulldog victory of the season. 
 
UP NEXT:
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday for the first double-header of the season as Samford will take on Seton Hall once again at 10 a.m. before playing host Southern Miss at 3 p.m. in the nightcap.
