Bulldogs Drop A Pair To Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Samford Softball team fell in a Sunday doubleheader to the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss, 3-0 and 3-2, to close out the Black & Gold Invitational.

In game one, six different Bulldogs recorded a base hit, but Samford was unable to scratch across any runs against the Golden Eagle pitching staff.

Jordyn Partain was tagged with the loss after surrendering a trio of runs over five innings of work. Partain also struck out a pair in game one. Lainey Baker made her colligate debut in the sixth inning by striking out two of the four Southern Miss batters that she faced.

The Golden Eagles scored one in the bottom of the first before adding two more insurance runs in the fifth to seal the 3-0 final in game one.

In the nightcap, Southern Miss jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening inning with a two-run home run off Baker, who started game two in the circle for the Bulldogs.

Grier Bruce singled to open the top of the second before eventually coming around to score on a Taylor Harris double to left center to cut the Southern Miss lead to 2-1.

Samford tied the game at 2-2 five batters later when a pinch-hitting Gwynnie Hornibrook singled home Harris with a laser to left.

Following the Bulldog rally, the Golden Eagles answered with a single run in the bottom of the third to make the game 3-2.

A pitcher's duel set in over the final five innings of play as neither starter made it to the third inning. In relief for Samford, McKenzie Newcomb tossed five shutout innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts including the final eight batters that she faced.

Baker was saddled with the defeat for the Bulldogs in game two.
