BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team fell in a pair of one-run games in the UAB Classic, with the games being held at the Samford Softball Stadium Saturday. The Bulldogs dropped a 1-0 decision to Lindenwood and then fell to Belmont, 4-3 in 10 innings.
With the losses, Samford falls to 2-5 on the young season. Lindenwood has a record of 2-7, while Belmont has a mark of 7-0.
In the Lindenwood game,
Sarah Squillace,
Merritt Cahoon,
Grier Bruce and
Ansley Yantis had one hit each for Samford.
Lainey Baker (0-2) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits to take the loss in the circle.
For Lindenwood, Lauren Pelton and Tori Hatton had a hit each. Keighlan Cronin (1-1) earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits.
The teams played a scoreless game for the first six innings. With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Pelton singled through the left side of the infield to start the rally for Lindenwood. The next two batters walked to load the bases. Pelton then scored on a passed ball for the game's lone run, giving Lindenwood a 1-0 win.
Against Belmont,
Kedzie Howe went 2-for-2 on the day. Cahoon and
Lindsey Nelson drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.
McKenzie Newcomb (1-1) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing two runs, just one earned, on six hits to take the loss.
Belmont was led by Nicole Hughes, going 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI. Maya Johnson (6-0) pitched the entire 10 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits to pick up the win for the Bruins.
Belmont took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Samford, however, came back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nelson singled to drive in
Logan Champion for Samford's first run. Yantis later scored on a double play to knot the score at 2-2.
The teams went into the 10
th inning still tied at 2-2. In the top of the 10
th, Belmont's Baie Ensio was placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker. Hughes later singled to drive in Ensio and MyKayla Spurlin for a 4-2 Belmont lead. In the bottom of the 10
th, Samford's
Abigail Dorsett was placed on second base. Dorsett later scored on a ground out by Cahoon, but the Bulldogs could not manage another run and the game ended in a 4-3 Belmont win.
Samford will conclude the UAB Classic with a game at UAB Sunday at 2 p.m.
