Baseball Tames Tigers in Extras, 9-8

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Samford Baseball rallied from down six runs to grab a 9-8 victory over Memphis on Sunday to close out its three-game set against the Tigers.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 1-2 while Memphis drops to 2-1.

"Oh man…what a great game and win for our guys," Head Coach Tony David said. "Not all wins are created equal. I told them the season would not have been over in defeat and not made with this victory, but it can define and propel us. We won a lot of games like that last year."

Freshman Jayden Davis led the Bulldogs with three hits on the day, while also scoring a run and driving one in.

John Anderson and Kace Garner both drove in a team-high two runs, with Anderson collecting a pair of hits and runs. Both came up clutch late for the Bulldogs, with Anderson smacking a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth and Garner knocking the eventual game-winning two-run single in the 11th.

Carson Hobbs (1-0) struck out five batters over three innings of one-hit relief to earn his first win of the season. Ben Petschke (1) held off a late charge from the Tigers in the bottom of the 11th to pick up his first save as a Bulldog.

Dominic Ganley and Trey Sanders both also added an inning of scoreless relief following the departure of starter Will Lynch, who struck out six batters over four innings in the no-decision.

"Lynch really shook off a tough first inning and was really good after," David said. "He only took one more blow and the wind had a lot to do with that one. Jacob Newman, Sanders, and Ganley did their jobs with only one more home run that got some help with the wind as well. Hobbs was electric late and Petschke closed the door. We are going to get healthy on the mound and are excited about this group."

The Tigers had the hot bats early, hanging up four runs in the bottom of the first. Memphis's four-run first was highlighted by a three-run homer from Austin Baskin.

Memphis added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a two-run shot by Tyler Eckert, but the Bulldogs responded in their next at-bat when Blake Bortak brought home Davis on an RBI double down the left field line to make it a 6-1 game.

The turning point in the contest came in the seventh inning when the Bulldogs put up five runs on four hits to tie the game at six. Freshman Lucas Steele delivered the first run of the frame when he brought home Garner on an RBI single to center. Josh Rodriguez followed suit with an RBI sac fly, followed by a bases-loaded single from Anderson, an RBI hit batsman from Garrett Howe, and a sac fly from Davis to tie the game.

The Tigers answered in their next at-bat when Anthony Hansen knocked a go-ahead solo shot. Memphis's 8-7 lead held until the top of the ninth with one out when Anderson came through by powering a 1-0 offering over the center field wall to tie the game at seven.

Hobbs's final inning of work in the bottom of the tenth saw him strand a pair of Memphis baserunners to set the stage for Samford in the top of the 11th. With nobody out, Howe moved runners Klein and Anderson over into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, before Garner eventually came through with a two-RBI knock up the middle to put the Bulldogs on top 9-7.

The Tigers were able to scratch one run off Petschke, but the junior reliever minimized the damage by punching out the game's final batter with two runners on base to slam the door shut.

"We were spectacular in the infield and pitched great after the first," David said. "There were so many chances to roll over and accept defeat and a nightmare weekend. We made lots of big hits and pitches. It was a total team win because we used almost everyone on the trip."

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 21 when they host Jacksonville State University in their home opener. First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 4:00 p.m. (CST).
