BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In the final game of the Samford Bulldog Classic, the Samford softball team caged the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, The Bulldogs improve to 5-9 on the year after a 3-2 weekend at the Samford Bulldog Classic. Southern Indiana flies north with a 3-5 record.

Lindsey Nelson led the way offensively with a pair of hits and two RBIs including her first home run of the season in the fourth inning. Merritt Cahoon scored twice, drove in one and collected two base knocks in the contest.

The sophomore duo of Sarah Squillace and Logan Champion each drove in a run to cap the weekend off.

In total, seven different Bulldogs had at least one base hit against the Screaming Eagles' pitching staff.

In the circle, Lainey Baker collected her second win of the season after throwing four innings of one-run ball.

Chloe Poss, in her Samford pitching debut, gave up one run over three innings of work and was awarded a save.

USI opened the scoring in the top of the second and led 1-0 when Cahoon singled up the middle to open the home half of the frame.

Cahoon scored three Bulldogs later to tie the game when a bloop single off the bat Nelson fell in front of the Screaming Eagle centerfielder.

Samford scored one run in each inning from the second to the sixth.

In the third, Grier Bruce worked a leadoff walk and later scored on a Cahoon sacrifice fly to right field to put Samford up for good at 2-1.

Nelson began the fourth with a bang as the junior gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead on her first home run of the 2023 season.

A Logan Champion RBI single in the fifth made it 4-1 for the home team before Southern Indiana plated a run in the top of the sixth.

The weekend ended on an exciting exclamation mark as Squillace raced around the base paths for the first Samford triple of the season. Abigail Dorsett scored on the play to crystallize the 5-2 Bulldog win.
