Samford Downs Jacksonville State For Saturday Split

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – On the second day of the JSU Gamecock Invite, the Samford softball team dropped the opener 10-1 to Western Michigan in five innings before rallying to defeat Jacksonville 7-1 in the nightcap.

Following the Saturday split, Samford will enter Sunday with a record of 8-15 on the year. Western Michigan is 6-10, while Jacksonville State is 11-9 after playing the Bulldogs on Saturday.

In game one, Jordyn Partain was dealt the loss after surrendering without retiring a Bronco batter in her outing.

Logan Champion and McKenzie Newcomb each logged two-hit games against WMU, while Grier Bruce and Merritt Cahoon both had a base knock on the afternoon.

Western Michigan plated four runs in the first and two runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings to run-rule Samford after five innings.

The lone Bulldog score came in the third when Newcomb singled through the ride side to score Champion after the Bulldog catcher reached base on her team-leading eighth double of the year.

In game two against Jacksonville State, Samford racked up 14 hits in the contest to tie the season high.

Each Bulldog in the Samford lineup recorded at least one hit on the afternoon led by Sarah Squillace, who tied her season-high with three. The Bulldog infielder also drove in a run and scored once.

The Samford trio of McKayla Cothran, Merritt Cahoon and Kinley Pate each had two-hit games and combined for three runs scored.

To go along with her three RBIs at the plate, Newcomb tossed her third complete game of the season. The Sophomore scattered three this over seven innings and fanned four Gamecocks to pick up her third win of the year.

Newcomb helped her own cause early and often in the second game on Saturday as the sophomore drove in Cothran in the top of the first to give Samford an early 1-0 lead.

Three batters later, Champion scored to make it 2-0 after one when Squillace punched a single left.

Samford blew the game wide open by scoring four runs in the second that included a Grier Bruce RBI double and a Newcomb two-run home run to left to put the Bulldogs out front 6-0.

Jacksonville State's lone run of the game came via a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth after Cothran had already driven in Squillace in the top half of the frame to solidify the 7-1 Bulldog victory.
