Bulldogs Return Home To Host Alabama State In Midweek Action

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After back-to-back weekends on the road, the Samford softball team returns to the friendly confines of Samford Softball Stadium on Tuesday to play host to the Alabama State Hornets.

The first pitch between the in-state foes is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday and can be streamed on ESPN+. Samford's game notes can be found here.

Tuesday's game will double as the program's St. Patrick's Day celebration. The first 50 fans in attendance will receive a free green Samford shirt.

Samford enters the matchup with an 8-15 record following a 2-1 weekend at the Jacksonville State-hosted JSU Gamecock Invite.

Alabama State brings a 13-9 record to Birmingham after taking both games against Mississippi Valley State to open its SWAC slate.

Tuesday will be the 18th meeting between the Bulldogs and the Yellow Jackets with Samford winning the previous 17 meetings. In the last meetings, Samford has outscored Alabama State 35-11.

During the 2022 season, the Bulldogs went 2-5 against in-state foes. Entering the midweek, Samford is 1-3 against Alabama teams this season.

Despite a 3-5 record on the season, McKenzie Newcomb has been one of the best pitchers in the country over the first month of the season. The sophomore has tallied 84 strikeouts against just eight walks in 75.2 innings of work. Newcomb's 84 strikeouts rank her 25th in the country with a Top 100 ERA of 1.57.

To go along with Newcomb in the circle, Logan Champion has been the best Bulldog position player in the early going of the season.

The Bulldog catcher ranks either first or second in nearly every offensive category including batting average (.324), hits (22), doubles (8), triples (1), total bases (41) and slugging percentage (.638) Her eight doubles are also 23rd nationally.
