Samford Sprints Past Alabama State In Midweek Contest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After two weeks on the road, the Samford softball team trilled the home faithful with an 11-5 comeback victory on Wednesday evening against the Hornets of Alabama State.

With the win, Samford moves to 9-15 on the season and has won three-straight home games dating back to the Samford Bulldog Classic. Alabama State drops to 13-10 on the year after defeat.

The victory also marked the 19-straight win for Samford over Alabama State.

Sophomore Grier Bruce led the offensive explosion for the Bulldogs with her team-leading fifth and sixth home runs of the season. Bruce also drove in four runs with a solo homer in the first and a three-run blast in the fifth.

Merritt Cahoon record a career-high four hits in the game and scored twice to aid in the offensive onslaught.

Along with Cahoon's quartet of hits, Sarah Squillace collected three hits of her own and scored three times. The infield duo of Cahoon and Squillance combined for seven of the 14 Bulldog hits on the night.

Logan Champion continued to be a threat offensively and defensively as the catcher crushed her fourth home run of the year in the home half of the fifth and threw out her 13th baserunner of the year in the game.

To round out the Bulldog attack, Kedzie Howe had her second multi-hit game on the season against Alabama State.

In the circle, Sara Bond notched her third win of the season by allowing only one run over five innings of relief work. Bond also fanned seven Hornet batters.

Jordyn Partain started in the circle for the Bulldogs and gave up three runs over the 0.2 innings of work allowing Alabama State to take a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

Bruce opened the scoring with her solo shot in the bottom of the first before the Hornets made it 4-1 through one and a half innings.

Samford answered with a run in the bottom of the second before tying the game at 4-all in the third on a Howe RBI single that Ansley Yantis.

Champion homered in the fourth for the first Bulldog lead of the game setting the stage for a six-run fifth inning.

Howe started off the fireworks by reaching base thanks to an Alabama State error. The sophomore scored three batters later when Champion poked a single down the left field line and moved Kinley Pate to third. Bruce's second big swing of the night cleared the bases and made it 9-4 Samford.

Following Bruce's second homer, a McKenzie Newcomb walk, a Cahoon single and a Yantis loaded the bases for Squillace. The sophomore promptly singled to right to score Newcomb and Cahoon. Squillace's double gave the Bulldogs an 11-4 advantage heading to the sixth.

Alabama State's last run of the night came on a solo home run in the top of the seventh for the 11-5 final.
