Bulldogs Drop Rebel Invitational Opener To Purdue

OXFORD, Miss. – On the opening day of the Ole Miss-hosted Rebel Invitational, the Samford Softball team fell 3-0 to the Boilermakers of Purdue. 
 
The Bulldogs will head into the rest of the weekend with a record of 9-16. Purdue improves to 13-10. 
 
Merritt Cahoon was the only Samford batter to reach base multiple times as the senior had a hit and walked twice on the afternoon.
 
The Samford trio of Logan Champion, McKayla Cothran and Kedzie Howe reach record a base hit in the contest. 
 
Despite being dealt the loss, Sara Bond struck out six Boilermakers over the course of five innings. Bond only allowed one earned run and four hits in her start for the Bulldogs.
 
McKenzie Newcomb surrendered one unearned run during her two-inning relief appearance on Thursday. 
 
A leadoff single by Purdue to start the game came around to score to give the Boilermakers a 1-0 lead after the opening inning. 
 
Purdue added one run in the third and one in the sixth for the 3-0 final score. Both Boilermaker runs scored due to a pair of Samford Errors on the plays.
 
The best Bulldog chance of the afternoon came in the fifth inning when Cahoon singled up the middle and then preceded to steal second and third with one out before ultimately being stranded on third.
 
UP NEXT:
On day two of the Rebel Invitational, Samford will open Friday with a game against St. Thomas at 10:30 a.m. CT before facing Ole Miss at 3:30 p.m. in the nightcap. The Ole Miss game will be streamed on SEC Network+.
