Samford Downs Ole Miss To Complete Historic Friday Sweep

OXFORD, Miss. – On the second day of the Rebel Invitational, the Samford softball team overpowered the St. Thomas Tommies by a score of 8-6 before knocking off Ole Miss 3-0 in historic fashion for the nightcap.

The Bulldog victory over Ole Miss is Samford's first win over an SEC team since knocking off Mississippi State on April 4, 2007. It is also the first Bulldog victory against a Power Five team since downing Georgia Tech in 2020.

With the Friday sweep, Samford improves to 11-16 on the year. St. Thomas fell to 6-15, while Ole Miss will enter Saturday with a record of 14-12.

In game one, Logan Champion got paced the Bulldog offense with the first four-hit game of her career. The Samford catcher also drove in a season-high four runs, while scoring three times herself.

The infield duo of Sarah Squillace and Grier Bruce each had pair of base knocks in the contest and an RBI. Squillace also scored once.

Mckenzie Newcomb picked up her fourth win of the season in Friday's opener as the sophomore allowed one run in 3.1 innings of relief.

Sara Bond got the start in the circle while Jordyn Partain and Taylor Harris also saw action against St. Thomas.

Samford's offensive onslaught struck early and often against the Tommies as Champion singled to left in the bottom of the first before coming around to score on a Bruce RBI single to make it 1-0 after one.

The Bulldogs exploded for four runs in the second which was highlighted by a two-run signal off the bat of Squillace and a two-run home run from Champion. Her fifth blast of the year put Samford in front 5-0 after the opening two frames.

St. Thomas stormed back to tie it at 5-5 by scoring one run in the top of the third and four in the fourth.

Samford answered with three runs in the home half fourth that included a two-run double from Champion to regain the lead at 8-5. Champion's double was her team-leading ninth double on the season.

Newcomb stifled the St. Thomas comeback and sealed the 8-6 victory for the Bulldogs in game one.

In game two, Bruce played hero again by rocketing her team-leading seventh home run of the season. To go along with Bruce, Lindsey Nelson collected her first multi-hit game since Feb. 26th against the Rebels.

Newcomb dazzled in the circle tossing a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts to capture her fifth win of the season. Friday's game was Newcomb's complete game shutout of the season and the first since the Opening Day win over Seton Hall.

To go along with her seven strikeouts, Newcomb only allowed three singles on the day and a walk on the afternoon. Thanks in large part to the Newcomb's performance in the circle, a Rebel runner never advanced to third in the contest.

All Samford runs came in the top of the third when McKayla Cothran opened the frame with a leadoff single to center. After a Squillace single and a Champion sac bunt to move Bulldogs into scoring position, Cothran scored on a passed ball to put Samford up 1-0.

On the very next pitch after the passed ball, Bruce demolished a 1-2 pitch and put Samford up 3-0 with one swing of the bat.

Following the home run, Newcomb retired 12 of the 14 final Rebels she faced, including 11-straight at one point to preserve Samford's historic 3-0 win over Ole Miss.

UP NEXT:
The Bulldogs will conclude the weekend on Saturday with a doubleheader against North Dakota State at 10:30 a.m. CT before a 1 p.m. rematch with St. Thomas.
