Bulldogs Stumble On Final Day Of Rebel Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. – The Samford Softball team fell in a pair of contests on Saturday to conclude the Rebel Invitational. The Bulldogs dropped a 7-1 decision to North Dakota State before a seventh-inning comeback fell short in a 5-3 game against St. Thomas.

Samford concludes the weekend with an 11-18 overall record after going 2-3 in the final non-conference tournament of the season. North Dakota State improves to 15-11, while St. Thomas moves to 11-15 after playing the Bulldogs.

In game one, Sarah Squillace recorded the first four-hit of her career against the Bison. Squillace also scored the one lone Bulldog run in the matchup.

Grier Bruce added two more hits of her own, while Logan Champion added to her RBI total with an RBI single in the fifth.

Sara Bond took the loss for the Bulldogs in the circle. The freshman allowed four runs in 1.2 innings of work against NDSU. Chloe Poss pitched the final 4.1 innings in relief and surrendered three runs.

North Dakota State scored in each of the first four innings to build a 7-0 advantage before Champion's RBI single scored Squillace in the top of the fifth to make it the final score of 7-1.

Against St. Thomas, Champion extended her team-best hitting streak to eight games with a trio of hits and a run scored.

With her two-hit game against St. Thomas, Bruce now has a team-high nine multi-hit games on the season. The sophomore also scored a run against the Tommies.

Lindsey Nelson also had a pair of base knocks and scored on the afternoon, while Merritt Cahoon and Sarah Katona each drove in a run.

In the circle for the Bulldogs, McKenzie Newcomb allowed four runs over 4.2 innings of work to be tagged with the loss. Lainey Baker tossed the final 1.1 innings in relief.

St. Thomas engineered a 4-0 lead by scoring one run in the first and three in the second before Nelson scored on a Chloe Poss pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth to make it a 4-1 game.

The Tommies extend the lead to 5-1 in the sixth with a solo home run to set the stage for a potential Samford comeback in the seventh.

Back-to-back-to-back one-out singles got the rally going and scored Champion to make it 5-2 St. Thomas. A Katona single to shortstop scored the final Bulldog run of the game before the Tommies got a groundout to cement the 5-3 final.
