Samford Sweeps Mercer On Opening Day Of SoCon Play

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On the opening day of Southern Conference play, the Samford softball team bested the Mercer Bears in both games by scores 3-1 and 4-3 in comeback fashion.

The Saturday sweep propels the Bulldogs to 13-18 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play. Mercer will head into the weekend finale with records of 9-21 and 0-2.

In game one, Sarah Squillace paced the Bulldog offense with a hit and a pair of RBIs. Grier Bruce added a base knock.

The Samford duo Lindsey Nelson and Kedzie Howe each had a hit and scored in the conference opener. Merritt Cahoon also had an RBI in the contest.

McKenzie Newcomb tossed a complete game five-hitter for her sixth win of the season. The win was Newcomb's fifth complete game this season.

Mercer opened the scoring Saturday with a solo home run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Samford answered with a Cahoon sacrifice fly in the home half of the third that scored Logan Champion to tie the game at 1-1 after the opening three innings of play.

A leadoff double from Nelson and a Mercer error that allowed Kedzie Howe to reach base brought Squillace to the plate with two on and one out. The sophomore singled to center scoring Nelson and Howe to put Samford up 3-1.

Following the RBI single, Newcomb shutdown the Bears to preserve the conference-opening 3-1 victory for Samford.

The come-from-behind dramatics continued as the Bulldogs had five of their seven hits come in the four-run seventh inning rally that won the game.

Cahoon led the way offensively with a pair of hits and an RBI. Champion collected her team-leading tenth double of the season and scored once.

Grier Bruce added to her team-best 19th RBI with a double in the seventh.

Jordyn Partain took home the win for the Bulldogs in the circle with a complete game effort. Partain also fanned five bears during her outing.

Mercer held a 2-0 advantage for the majority of the game after scoring a pair of runs the in the top of the second. The Bears added an additional run in the top of the seventh with a solo home run to put Samford down 3-0 with three outs remaining.

The seventh inning magic started with back-to-back leadoff doubles from Champion and Bruce to get Samford on the board at 3-1. A Cahoon single up the middle that scored a pinch-running Abigail Dorsett made it a one-run game.

A sacrifice bunt and flyout out to center brought freshman Chloe Poss to the plate with a pinch-running Kinley Pate standing on second.

Poss smacked a single to right for her first collegiate hit and RBI, while also tying bringing Samford all the way back to tie the game at 3-3.

Howe ended the game on a 3-1 pitch that the sophomore rocketed off the Mercer second basemen's glove that cause the ball to ricochet into right field deep enough to bring home Poss for the game-winning run.
