Baseball Shuts Out Skyhawks to Clinch Series Sweep

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team picked up a series sweep over the UT Martin Skyhawks with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

The win marks Samford's fourth in a row and improves their record to 10-10 overall. UT Martin drops to 5-16.

The Bulldogs turned four double plays to reserve the shutout, with twin killings that ended the third, sixth, and eighth innings.

Lucas Steele recorded a hit and an RBI while Jayden Davis accounted for a hit and a run scored. Garrett Staton, Stephen Klein, and Garrett Howe all also added a hit.

Will Lynch (1-2) picked up his first win of the season. The sophomore righty struck out four batters over 5.1 scoreless innings while walking just one.

Ben Petschke (4) picked up his second save of the series by tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Turner Thompson held Skyhawk hitters in check with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief in which he struck out three.

The Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Steele brought in Davis on an RBI sac fly to right field. Davis knocked a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch before being brought to third on an infield single by Klein.

The Samford staff stranded two or more Skyhawk baserunners four times in the afternoon. UT Martin got their best chance to score in the top of the ninth when a single, a walk, and a hit batsman loaded the bases with two outs. Petschke recorded the game's final out by making a snow-cone snag on a high-bouncing ground ball before flipping it over to Klein to end the contest.

"Just a great job by our guys today," Head Coach Tony David said. "We turned unbelievable double plays throughout and Will did a good job of dancing around a lot of baserunners. Turner came in after him and was electric again. It was a lot more fun today to not pitch against LSU. All of our pitchers threw strikes, and it was awesome."

Despite being outhit by the Skyhawks, Samford managed to leave just seven runners on base in the contest while UT Martin stranded 11 base runners.

The Bulldog pitching staff conceded just three walks while inducing nine ground-ball outs and five fly-ball outs.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday, March 21 when they host North Alabama at 6:00 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
