Bulldogs Run-Rule Stetson For Friday Split

ATHENS, Ga. – On the opening day of the Georgia Bulldog Classic, the Samford softball team fell 3-0 to Ball State before promptly run-ruling Stetson 10-2 in the second game on Friday afternoon.
With the split on Friday, Samford moves to 6-11 on the season. Following their games with Samford, Ball State sits at 6-5 while Stetson is 12-6.
In game one, McKenzie Newcomb and Taylor Harris owned the only two Bulldog hits in the contest.
Lainey Baker was handed the loss after the freshman surrendered a trio of runs in two innings of work in the circle. In relief, Newcomb struck out five Cardinals over four shutout innings.
Ball State scored one run in the first and two in the third for the 3-0 final.
In game two, the Bulldog bats came alive and scored in each of the first three innings. Samford had a season-high 10 runs and 14 hits off of the Hatter pitching staff.
Infield duo Logan Champion and Grier Bruce each had three hits in the game. Bruce scored once, while Champion scored three times and drove in a run on the afternoon.
The Samford trio of Newcomb, Harris and Ansley Yantis each had two hits, scored once and had an RBI.
Merritt Cahoon added to the offense by driving in a run and scoring twice.
Sara Bond had a great day at the ballpark as the freshman collected the win after allowing a pair of runs over three innings in the circle and smashed a grand slam in the top of the first inning.
The offense came early and often for the Bulldogs as Samford plated a pair of runs in the first before loading the bases for Bond. The first home run of Bond's career gave Samford a 6-0 lead after the opening inning.
Samford poured on three more in the second highlighted by Champion's third home run of the season.
The final Bulldog run came in the third off the bat of Newcomb and scored Bruce to put Samford up 10-0 after three.
Stetson scored one run in the fourth and one in the fifth before being run-ruled 10-2 at the end of five innings.
