Men’s Basketball Edged Late Against Chattanooga in SoCon Quarterfinals

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team battled to overcome an 18-point deficit in the second half but ultimately fell 85-82 in the final seconds to Chattanooga in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Championship on Saturday.
 
Jermaine Marshall (27) and Logan Dye (22) combined for 49 points on the night, with Marshall pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Dye converted a team-best five threes, while Marshall sank 12-15 foul shots.
 
Bubba Parham scored 11 points while A.J. Staton-McCray matched a career-high with five steals to go along with eight points. Jaden Campbell added nine points and three rebounds.
 
The Bulldogs outscored the Mocs 13-7 over the first five and a half minutes, with a three by Dye putting the Bulldogs up 19-12 at the 12:39 mark.
 
Chattanooga caught fire over the next four minutes however, rattling off a 13-5 run that saw them take a 25-24 lead following a Jake Stephens three with 8:39 left in the half.
 
Following a free throw from Staton-McCray that tied the game at 29 at the 5:53 mark, the Mocs scored seven of the next eight points to go up 36-30. Samford scored seven of the next 10 points, but Stephens capped off the first half with a buzzer-beater three to give Chattanooga a 42-37 lead at halftime.
 
Chattanooga opened the second half with a 13-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 55-37 with 16:52 to go. The Bulldogs stayed the course, rattling off a 12-4 run to get trim their deficit to 10 (59-49) following a Dye trey at the 11:18 mark.
 
The Bulldogs got back to within single digits on multiple occasions, with the latest coming on a pair of Marshall free throws that made the score 68-60 in favor of Chattanooga with 8:03 to go.
 
Samford chipped away and outscored the Mocs 16-10 over the next five minutes to get within two points following a Marshall layup with 2:34 to play. Marshall gave the Bulldogs the lead one minute later with a three that put them up 79-78 with 1:42 left.
 
The Mocs came up with the game's biggest shot when Jamal Johnson buried a three with 36 seconds left that put them up 81-80. The Bulldogs got to within one point on a Staton-McCray layup with seven seconds left, but Samford never got a chance for the game-tying shot following a foul on Parham down 85-82 with two seconds left.
 
Samford finished the night shooting 43 percent (23-54) from the field, 38 percent (12-31) from three, and 69 percent (24-35) from the charity stripe. The Mocs tallied a 51 percent efficiency (25-49) on field goals, highlighted by a clip of 54 percent (15-28) from three. The Mocs additionally shot 65 percent (20-31) from the foul line.

The Bulldogs tallied 11 steals and forced 16 turnovers that led to 19 points. Samford additionally registered 40 points off the bench and 18 points in the paint.
