BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Athletics Department officially inducted the 2023 class of the Samford Athletics Hall of Fame in ceremonies held on campus Saturday evening.
The 2023 class, the sixth in the Hall of Fame's history, consists of the 2005 women's soccer team, men's basketball's Steve Barker, softball's Megan Dowdy, baseball's Phillip Ervin and football's Jaquiski Tartt.
"I was really blessed and pleased," Barker said of hearing the news he had been selected for the Hall of Fame. "It was really a great day. Right then I called everyone I could think of and told them. That was a great day when (Athletics Director) Martin (Newton) called me."
The festivities started with a reception held in the Hall of Fame, which is located on the third floor of the Pete Hanna Center. All inductees and their invited guests were invited to the reception.
Dowdy said she felt blessed to be a part of this year's induction class.
"It's an honor," Dowdy said. "I've been thinking about my time at Samford and just how special it was. The other inductees in this class are incredible. It's just an honor to be here."
The crowd then moved to Cooney Hall in the Brock School of Business where the induction ceremony took place. The ceremony kicked off with Janet Cone receiving the John C. Pittman Lifetime Achievement Award. Cone started the women's basketball program at Samford and later served the school as an Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator. She has been the Athletics Director at UNC Asheville since 2004.
Following the Pittman Award presentation, the members of the class were inducted. An induction video was shown and the inductees in attendance gave a speech.
"I was grateful," Ervin said of being told he was selected for the Hall of Fame. "I was kind of shocked and just very happy. I went and told my wife, they're putting me into the Hall of Fame at Samford. It was cool, it was overwhelming, and it was just a great experience."
