Big Inning Propels Bulldogs Over UNCG In Weekend Finale

GREENSBORO, N.C. – To conclude the weekend, the Samford softball team toppled the UNCG Spartans by a score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon behind a four-run third inning and a spectacular pitching performance from McKenzie Newcomb.

The victory elevates Samford to 18-25 on the year and 7-5 in Southern Conference with a pair of league weekends remaining. UNCG falls to 26-17 and 5-3.

Newcomb picked up her 10th win of the season on Sunday by allowing only a pair of runs in her seventh complete game on the season. The sophomore fanned five Spartans and did not surrender a walk, while only allowing five hits.

Seven of the nine Bulldogs in the Samford lineup collected a base knock in the contest led by the trio of Logan Champion, Merritt Cahoon and Lindsey Nelson. The threesomes each had two hits on Sunday.

After a quiet opening two frames, all six of the game's runs were plated in the third inning.

The scoring bonanza started when McKayla Cothran and Kinley Pate had back-to-back leadoff singles to open the top of the third. Cothran advanced to third on the Pate single and second the game's first run on a Bulldog double steal to make it 1-0.

Pate came around to score two batters later when Bruce extended her hit streak to a team-best eight games with an RBI single to left field. Back-to-back singles from Cahoon and Nelson loaded the bases to advance Bruce to third. The sophomore came home to make it a 3-0 Bulldog advantage on an Ansley Yantis sacrifice foul fly to left.

The final Samford run of the game came when Newcomb crushed a ball that went off the top of the wall in left field for an RBI single that scored Cahoon.

In total, the Bulldogs sent nine batters to the plate in the four-run third.

UNCG's lone runs of the game came in the bottom of the third on a two-out two-run home run to left field.

Following the home run, Newcomb retired 13 of the next 14 Spartans that she faced including nine-straight at one point to preserve the 4-2 Samford victory.
