Bruce’s Monster Day Powers Samford Past Western Carolina In Series Finale

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Led by sophomore Grier Bruce, the Samford softball team caged the Catamounts of Western Carolina by a score of 5-4 in the series finale on Sunday.

With the victory, Samford will enter the third week of Southern Conference play with records of 15-21 and 4-2. WCU falls to 12-17 and 2-4.

McKenzie Newcomb picked her eighth win of the season on Sunday with another complete game performance, the sophomore's sixth of the year.

Offensively, Bruce had a game for the ages going 4-for-4 with three home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.

Bruce's three-homer performance is the first by a Bulldog batter since Whitney Hinton hit three against Alabama State in 2018. After Sunday's victory, Bruce has 10 home runs on the season, making her the eighth Bulldog in program history to have double-digit home runs in a single season.

To go along with Bruce, Logan Champion and Chole Poss each had two-hit games.

Freshman Rylee Butler recorded the first of her collegiate career on Sunday with a single up the middle in the top of the fourth.

Merritt Cahoon walked a season-high four times in the 5-4 win.

After a pair of scoreless innings to open the game, Samford broke through with Bruce's first dinger of the day in the third. A two-run shot that scored Champion put the Bulldogs up 2-0.

A quiet fourth preceded Bruce's second home run in the fifth that made it a 3-0 game after four and a half innings in the books.

Western Carolina stormed back in the home half of the fifth with a three-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.

Bruce put the exclamation mark on her day with a two-run home in the top of the sixth that scored McKayla Cothran and put Samford up for good at 5-3.

The Catamounts attempted to mount another comeback but could only muster a single run off of Newcomb in the final two frames as the sophomore slammed the door to salvage the 5-4 win for the Bulldogs.
