Cravey’s Complete Game Guides Baseball to Series-Opening Win at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior starting pitcher Jacob Cravey tossed all nine innings of the Samford Bulldog's 3-2 win at Wofford in their series opener on Friday evening, striking out 10 batters and giving up just two runs while walking only one.

The complete game marked Cravey's third of the season and first nine-inning complete game of 2023. The Andalusia, Ala. native's 10 strikeouts marked the third time this season that he tallied double-digit punch outs.

The win improves the Bulldogs' record to 22-16 overall and 8-2 in SoCon play. The Terriers fall to 27-10 overall and 6-4 in conference action.

Jayden Davis led the Bulldogs at the plate with two runs on two hits and two RBI. The freshman infielder slugged a home run and a double in the contest.

Stephen Klein also notched a pair of hits and knocked the go-ahead double in the seventh. Garrett Staton logged a run and a hit while John Anderson added a double.

Wofford cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third on three hits. Cameron Gill led off the inning with a single and stole second before being brought home on an RBI single to left by Jack Renwick single to left. Marshall Toole delivered the inning's final run on an RBI double to right field.

The Bulldogs answered in the top of the fourth in the form of Davis's third home run of the season, a solo blast that trimmed Samford's deficit to 2-1.

Wofford looked poised to plate more runs in the bottom of the fifth when they got runners at second and third with one away, but Cravey escaped the jam unscathed by recording a huge one-out strikeout and a 1-3 putout on a bunt attempt.

The Bulldogs used that momentum to scratch a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI doubles by Davis and Klein. Davis's two-bagger brought home Staton, who reached base one batter earlier on an infield hit, while Klein's gave Samford a 3-2 advantage.

The Terriers got the tying run on base in the bottom of the eighth in the form of a two-out single by Trey Yunger, but he was caught stealing by Kaden Dreier a few pitches later to end the scoring threat in the frame.

"That was a great college baseball game," Head Coach Tony David said. "A lot of good things happened today but it obviously starts and ends with Cravey. He's our guy; a true Friday-night guy. He wanted the opportunity to finish it. Ben was ready to finish it if they got a runner in the 9th. Getting the opening win without using any bullpen is huge. Jayden had a great day at the plate with three good swings and Klein to put us on top. Cravey escaped trouble in the 7th and KD made a huge throw. They have a really good team. It will be a good battle all weekend."

The Bulldogs and Terriers will play game two of their weekend series on Saturday, April 22. First pitch from Spartanburg, S.C. is slated for 2:00 p.m. (CST).
