Bulldogs Drop Weekend Finale To Furman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After walking off Furman twice on Saturday, the Samford softball team fell 6-4 to the Paladins on Sunday afternoon to close out Senior Weekend.

Following the series win, Samford will head into the midweek with an overall record of 20-27 and a 9-6 mark in Southern Conference play. Furman moves to 20-26 on the year and 8-6 in league play.

Sara Bond got the starting nod in the circle for the Bulldogs and gave up a run in 1.1 innings of work. In her first pitching appearance since March 17 against St. Thomas, Taylor Harris surrendered three hits and a run in an inning of relief.

McKenzie Newcomb was dealt the loss for the Bulldogs as the sophomore allowed four unearned runs over 4.2 innings. Newcomb also struck out five Furman batters in her outing.

In a game that saw Samford reach double-digit hits for the third time on the weekend, Sarah Squillace and Logan Champion each had two hits, a run driven in and a run scored in the contest. Outfielder McKayla Cothran added two more base knocks of her own.

Grier Bruce extended her reach safely streak to a team-best 13 games with an RBI single and run scored.

The Bulldog bats came out hot as Samford opened the weekend finale with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. A Champion single up the middle brought home Squillace before Merritt Cahoon continued her remarkable Senior Weekend with an RBI single to center that scored Bruce to make it 2-0 Samford after one.

Furman got on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run to left center. Squillace answered in the home half of the inning with an RBI double down the left field line that scored Ansley Yantis to make it a 3-1 game.

The Paladins got a run back in the third with an RBI single. A quiet fourth inning was a prelude to the loud later innings.

Bruce's RBI single to right in the fifth scored Champion and made it a 4-2 Bulldog advantage with a pair of innings remaining.

Furman scored four unearned runs in the top of the seventh to salvage a 6-4 victory in the series finale.
