Samford Downs ETSU Twice To Open Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On the opening day of the Easter Weekend series, the Samford softball team took both games from the ETSU Buccaneers on Thursday by scores of 2-0 in game one and 5-1 in the nightcap on Thursday.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Bulldogs improve to 17-21 overall with a 6-2 record in Southern Conference play. ETSU drops to 9-25 and 2-6.

With Thursday's wins, Samford is riding a five-game winning streak at home against SoCon foes.

In game one, Merritt Cahoon played hero offensively for the Bulldogs as the senior drove in both Samford runs in the contest with a sacrifice fly in the first and a solo home run in the third.

In total, seven Bulldogs recorded a hit in game one. McKayla Cothran scored came home to score on the Cahoon sac fly in the first.

McKenzie Newcomb sank the Buccaneer offensive ship on Thursday by only allowing two hits in a complete game shutout. Newcomb fanned seven ETSU batters in her seventh complete game of the season.

Game two saw a tad bit more offense highlighted by Logan Champion and Ansley Yantis hitting home runs for the Bulldogs.

Sarah Squillace paced the Samford attack with a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored. Lindsey Nelson had a base knock and scored, while Cothran scored after reaching base via a walk.

Jordyn Partain tossed her third complete game of the season and only allowed an unearned run to pick up her third win of the season.

To open the scoring in game two, Cahoon singled to center in the bottom of the first to score Cothran. Squillace doubled home Nelson in the second to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 after two innings in the books.

The lone ETSU run of the day came in the top of the fifth when a Buccaneer scored due to a Bulldog error to cut the lead in half.

Champion answered in the home half of the inning with a two-run no-doubt shot to left field that made it 4-1. The dinger was Champion's eighth of the season.

Samford's bats were not done just yet as Yantis poked one over the fence in left for the junior's second home run in the last five games.

Partain sat ETSU down in order to secure the Thursday sweep with a 5-1 victory for the Bulldogs.
