Bulldogs Slip In Series Finale To ESTU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team fell 7-3 on Friday to the ETSU Buccaneers to close out the Easter Weekend series.

The Bulldogs drop to 17-22 overall and a 6-3 in the Southern Conference after the opening three weekends of league play. ETSU moves to 10-25 and 3-6 on the campaign.

Merritt Cahoon was the only Bulldog to have multiple hits on Friday as the lone Samford singled in the third and fifth innings. Cahoon also drove in one of the three Bulldog runs on the day.

McKayla Cothran and Lindsey Nelson each had a hit and an RBI in the contest, while Cothran also scored once. Grier Bruce and Sarah Squillace scored the other two Bulldog runs during the finale.

In the circle, Sara Bond got the start for the Samford and was tagged with the loss after allowing a pair of runs in just 1.1 innings of work.

McKenzie Newcomb made a relief appearance that lasted 5.2 innings. The sophomore surrendered five runs during her outing.

After a scoreless first, ETSU plated a pair in the second and three more in the third to construct a 5-0 advantage after two and a half innings played.

All three Bulldog runs came in the bottom of the third. The rally started when Squillace reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error. Squillace scored from second on a Cothran single to shortstop to make it 5-1.

Cothran stole second and came around to score when Cahoon punched a single through the right side following a Bruce single.

The final Samford run of the day came when Nelson legged out an infield single that allowed Bruce to score from second.

ETSU added runs in the top of the fifth and seventh for the 7-3 finale score.
