5.2.23 | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In the final home game of the 2023 regular season, the Samford softball team's seventh inning rally fell short as the Bulldogs dropped an 8-4 contest to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Tuesday.Â
Â
Samford will enter the final weekend of the regular season with an overall record of 20-29 while Jacksonville State improves to 28-19.
Â
McKenzie Newcomb was the pitcher of record for the Bulldogs on Tuesday evening as the sophomore allowed five runs in 2.2 innings of work without a strikeout. In a relief appearance, Jordyn Partain tossed 4.1 innings and surrendered three runs.Â
Â
Grier Bruce extended her team-best on-base streak to 15 games by going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. The duo of Sarah Squillace and McKayla Cothran each had a pair of hits and scored once on Tuesday.Â
Â
Merritt Cahoon pushed her team-best hitting streak to nine games with a single in the sixth inning.Â
Â
Jacksonville State opened the scoring four batters into the game with a two-run single down the right field line. The Bulldogs got one back in the bottom of the first when Cothran scored on a Bruce sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 after one inning in the books.Â
Â
Following a quiet second inning, the Gamecocks extended the lead to 8-1 by plating three runs in the third and fifth innings.Â
Â
Samford got back on the board in the sixth when Bruce belted her 12th home run of the season over the wall in left field. Bruce's 12th dinger of the year ties the sophomore with Callie Brister and Hannah Trombly for the third-most home runs by a Bulldog in a single season. Whitney Hinton's 15 during the 2019 campaign is the program record.Â
Â
Down six runs, the bottom of the seventh started with Sara Bond working a leadoff walk. Abigail Dorsett pinch ran for Bond and came home to score after back-to-back doubles off the bats of Squillace and Dorsett. Two batters later, Bruce doubled home Squillace to make it an 8-4 contest before Jacksonville State recorded the final two outs of the game.Â
