Samford Sweeps Chattanooga To Conclude Regular Season

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – In the regular season finale, the Samford softball team caged the Chattanooga Mocs by a score of 5-3 to complete the weekend three-game sweep.

With the win, the Bulldogs conclude the regular season with an overall record of 23-29. Samford's Southern Conference record of 12-6 makes the Bulldogs the second seed in the upcoming SoCon tournament.

The loss drops Chattanooga to 24-25 overall and 7-11 in SoCon Play.

Lainey Baker got the start in the start in the circle for the Bulldogs and allowed a pair of earned runs over her 2.2 innings of no-decision work.

Sara Bond picked up her fourth win of the season in relief on Sunday by tossing three scoreless innings. The freshman opened her outing by retiring the first nine Chattanooga batters that she faced.

The pairing of Sarah Squillace and McKenzie Newcomb led the Samford offense on Sunday with each Bulldog collecting a base hit. Squillace drove in one run, while Newcomb plated two.

Lindsey Nelson and Ansley Yantis played key roles on Sunday with each Bulldog adding a base knock and an RBI.

A patient approach at the plate paid early dividends for the Bulldogs as Samford loaded the basses via a hit by pitch, a fielder's choice and a walk. The scoring opened when Nelson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which resulted in Grier Bruce scoring to make it 1-0.

Newcomb blew the game open with a two-run two-out single to center that scored Merritt Cahoon and Champion for a 3-0 lead.

One batter later, Ansley Yantis made it a 4-0 game after the top of the first with an RBI single to left that plated Nelson.

Chattanooga answered in the home half of the first by getting on the scoreboard when a Moc scored on a passed ball.

Samford's fifth and final run came in the third inning when Squillace singled home Nelson for insurance and to make it a 5-1 contest.

Chattanooga added two runs off of Baker in the third before Bond tranquilized the Moc Rally.

Newcomb recorded her first save of the season when the sophomore sat down all four Chattanooga batters she faced to preserve the 5-3 Bulldog win.
