BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team tallied an early goal, but eventually fell to the DePaul Blue Demons, 2-1 in the Bulldogs' home opener Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the loss, Samford falls to 0-1-1 on the young season, DePaul improves to 1-1 with the victory.
As a team, Samford outshot DePaul, 11-10. The Bulldogs had seven shots on goal to two for the Blue Demons.
Whitaker Buchanan scored Samford's lone goal of the contest. Mya Gardner and Ellie Mink netted the two DePaul goals in the win for the Blue Demons.
Samford got on the scoreboard early when Buchanan scored off an assist by
Kyla Reynolds for a 1-0 Bulldog lead in the sixth minute of the contest. Samford took the one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.
DePaul knotted the score at 1-1 when Gardner scored off an assist from Susie Soderstrom in the 55
th minute of the contest. The game-winning goal came in the 77
th minute when Mink scored off an assist from Ebba Costow.
Samford will host Jacksonville State on Thursday, Aug. 24. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Shauna Yelton Field.
