BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team shut out the Oklahoma Sooners by a score of 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
The win marks just Samford's second win over a Big 12 opponent. The Bulldogs downed Baylor, 1-0 during the 2016 season. With the win, Samford improves to 2-1-1 on the season. Oklahoma falls to 3-1 with the loss.
Kyla Reynolds led Samford with two goals, while
Anna Major and
Mia Wehby added one goal each.
Layla Brown and
Mary Raymond had an assist each. Samford goalkeeper
Zoe Clevely saved three shots to post her third shutout of the young season. As a team, Samford outshot Oklahoma, 16-9. The Bulldogs had 10 corner kicks, to four for the Sooners.
For Oklahoma, goalkeeper Olivia Ramey played the first half, allowing three goals. Sierra Giorgio played in goal for the second half and had three saves and one goal allowed. Leonie Weber led the Sooners with four shots, including one on goal.
Reynolds got the scoring started with a goal off an assist from Brown in the sixth minute of the match. Reynolds added her second goal off an assist from Raymond in the 13
th minute for a 2-0 Samford lead. The third goal of the first half came from
Anna Major in the 41
st minute to make the score 3-0.
In the second half, Wehby scored her first goal in a Samford uniform in the 82
nd minute to make the final score 4-0.
Samford will play at Ole Miss on Thursday, Aug. 31. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Oxford, Miss.
