BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team scored a trio of goals to earn a 3-0 win over the Kennesaw State Owls for Samford's annual Shauna's House game Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
The Shauna's House game is held in honor of head coach
Todd Yelton's late wife who passed away of cancer in 2015. The money raised goes to help keep orphans who are too old for the orphanages from winding up on the street. Yelton said the support the game receives has meant a lot to him.
"We love this university, and it has loved us back," Yelton said. "I'm thankful and grateful for the people here and what they do, but more importantly, what they do for some people they have never met who are thousands of miles from here. From the bottom of my heart, I'm really thankful."
Mary Raymond,
Layla Brown and
Taylor Yount each scored a goal for the Bulldogs in the win. Yelton said he was proud of the way his team performed Sunday afternoon.
"That's a team (Kennesaw State) that just shut out Georgia State, who I think is a good team and they went 1-1 with Florida," Yelton said. "So, to put three on the board and we probably could have maybe had a couple of more, I thought it was a pretty good performance from our group and I'm proud of them."
As a team, Samford outshot Kennesaw State, 22-7. The Bulldogs had nine corner kicks, to three for the Owls. Samford goalkeeper
Zoe Clevely had three saves in posting her seventh shutout, including her sixth solo shutout of the season.
Samford got the scoring started when Raymond scored a goal in the sixth minute of the match. Brown added a goal off an assist from
Kyla Reynolds in the 52nd minute for a 2-0 Samford lead. Yount netted a goal off an assist from Raymond in the 59
th minute to make the score 3-0.
With the win, Samford improved to 4-1-3 on the season. Kennesaw State fell to 1-3-3 with the loss.
Samford will next play at Harvard on Thursday, Sept. 14. The game is set for a 4 p.m. (CT) start from Cambridge, Mass.
