BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team battled the fifth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide to a 0-0 tie Sunday evening at Shauna Yelton Field.
"We had some great chances," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "The beauty of this is, we played the fifth-ranked team in the country and most people would be excited, but we're going to be disappointed about it because we felt like we could have won it. But Alabama, they're a heck of a side, they have a lot of good players, eight and 14 are special. I couldn't be more proud of our kids and their effort, I just wish we could have pushed one over the line, but we'll take it."
This marks Samford's third game against an SEC opponent this season, all ending in scoreless ties. The Bulldogs are 1-0-3 against Power 5 opponents, with last Sunday's 4-0 win over Oklahoma. Samford is now 2-1-3 on the season, while Alabama's record moves to 4-0-2.
As a team, Samford outshot Alabama, 20-15. Each team had four shots on goal, with goalkeepers
Zoe Clevely of Samford and Coralie Lallier of Alabama having four saves each.
Mary Raymond led Samford with eight shots.
Kyla Reynolds,
Whitaker Buchanan and
Taylor Yount had two shots each. Isabel Smith led Alabama with four shots, while Gianna Paul had three shots for the Crimson Tide.
Samford will play at in-state rival Troy on Thursday, Sept. 7. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start from Troy, Ala.
