TROY, Ala. – Samford senior defender
Ella Simpson scored a goal in the 85
th minute of Thursday night's game at Troy to give the Bulldog soccer team a 1-0 win over the Trojans at the Troy Soccer Complex.
The teams played through most of the game in a scoreless tie. Simpson scored her goal on a header off a corner kick from
Alyssa Conarton to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The goal was Simpson's second of the season, while the assist was Conarton's first of the campaign.
With the win, Samford improved to 3-1-3 on the season. Troy fell to 5-2 with the loss.
As a team, Samford outshot Troy, 17-4, including a 13-1 advantage in the second half. The Bulldogs had 10 corner kicks, to just four for the Trojans.
Mary Raymond led Samford individually with six shots, including two shots on goal.
Whitaker Buchanan took four shots, with one coming on goal.
Samford goalkeeper
Zoe Clevely posted her sixth shutout of the season, including five solo shutouts. She saved two shots in keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard.
For Troy, Hallie Field, Dolce Villaflor, Allisa Detlefsen and Tatum Tishler had one shot each. Troy goalkeeper Rubie Kelley saved three shots, allowing the one late goal.
The Bulldogs will next host Kennesaw State for the annual Shauna's House game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. Admission to all home games is FREE.
