BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – B.J. Millican, who has worked for Samford University since December of 2014, has been named Associate Athletics Director for Marketing, Communications and Broadcast, the Samford Athletics Department announced today.
"We are extremely excited to have B.J. join our team in this very critical leadership role for Samford Athletics," Executive Associated AD for External Affairs Corey Green said. "B.J. is a Samford veteran who has done great work for our university and athletics department during his tenure. We look forward to BJ leading our team into this next chapter and taking us to the next level."
Millican, who was hired at Samford University in December of 2014, previously worked as Art Director & Graphic Designer for the Bulldogs athletics department. He also served the University as the Assistant Director of Broadcast Media and later as the Director of Broadcast Media in the Office of Marketing and Communication.
"I am very appreciative to Martin Newton and Corey Green for giving me this new opportunity to work alongside a talented team of people in athletics," Millican said. "I'm excited and ready to get to work."
Millican's graphic design work has been nationally recognized by digital and design strategy company, SkullSparks, regularly landing on Top 25 lists for the best in Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) design. In 2018, he helped Samford garner a Top 10 spot for FCS content. He produces and creates print, website and digital content for Samford's social media channels.
Millican has also been recognized nationally for his video content, earning recognition from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), the Baptist Communicators Association (BCA), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He co-produced the video "Devlin Hodges' Duck Tales: A Quest for the Walter Payton Award" which won the Gold Award for Best Digital Video Segment from NACMA in 2019.
Before coming to Samford, Millican spent 11 years in local broadcast television as a sports producer and anchor at WIAT-TV (CBS42) in Birmingham and WVUA-TV in Tuscaloosa.
Millican earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership from Samford University in December of 2020. He also earned his Master's in Sport Management from the University of Florida in 2022.
Millican is a native of Birmingham and he and his wife, Becky, have three children.
In addition to Millican joining the Athletics Department, a few other hires have been recently announced as well. Nate Gurich was recently named Associate AD for Facilities, Game Operations and Equipment. Tyler Miller has been hired as Director of Facilities and Operations. Rylee Jones, a 2021 and 2023 Samford graduate, has been hired in the Corporate Sponsorship sales position.
