Women’s Basketball Drops Road Contest At Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Samford women's basketball team dropped a 75-52 decision at Chattanooga Saturday afternoon at McKenzie Arena.
 
With the loss, Samford fell to 8-9 overall and 0-2 in Southern Conference play. Chattanooga improved to 14-3 overall and 2-0 in league action.
 
Samford was led in the loss by Kennedy Langham with 11 points. Emily Bowman and Carly Heidger had seven points and seven rebounds each.
 
For Chattanooga, Jada Guinn led the way with 24 points and six rebounds. Raven Thompson scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Mocs, while Karsen Murphy added 13 points for Chattanooga.
 
Samford got off to a hot start, racing out to a 7-0 lead with 8:30 to go in the first quarter after a turnaround jumper by Heidger. Chattanooga scored the next five points to cut the lead to 7-5, but Samford pushed the lead back out to 10-5 with 5:16 left in the period after a layup by Lexie Pritchard. Chattanooga fought back to cut the lead to one point at 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Chattanooga opened the second quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 24-14 lead with 6:53 to go in the period after a three-pointer by Sigrun Olafsdottir. The Mocs led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter and they held a 37-26 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
 
After Samford cut the lead to 10 points at 39-29 early in the third quarter, Chattanooga went on a 12-2 run to push its lead to 20 points at 51-31 with 4:32 left in the quarter following a jumper by Guinn. Chattanooga led, 60-38 at the end of the third period.
 
Chattanooga pushed its lead to 26 points at 64-38 with 7:17 left in the game after a layup by Murphy. The Mocs led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter and Chattanooga ended the game with a 75-52 win.
 
Samford will return home to play host to Western Carolina on Thursday, Jan. 18. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
