BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team wrapped up a successful home weekend with a 4-3 win over Troy Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
With the win, Samford improved to 2-3 on the young season. Troy fell to 5-1 with the loss.
 
"Today was a complete team effort from our guys," Samford head coach Oliver Reynolds said. "From top to bottom, everyone played a role in getting us a tight 4-3 win. The key was starting out great and taking the doubles point, which gave us a lot of momentum going into singles."
 
On the No. 1 doubles court, Samford's Maxwell Giddens and Sandeep Mohandoss defeated Yeray Pastor and Luciano Alcocer, 6-4. Troy took the match at No. 2 doubles, but on the No. 3 doubles court, Samford's Will Gray and Darcy Nicholls earned a 6-3 win over Noah Martens and Benjamin Ambrosio, giving Samford the first point of the contest.
 
"Troy is such a quality team with a lot of toughness, and we knew they were going to fight back and force us to have to earn everything," Reynolds said. "Our guys showed so much fight and they continue to improve in a lot of the areas that we have prioritized daily in practice. I was so proud of everyone today and very impressed with Seb (Sebastian Harrison) and the big wins he has contributed to as a freshman. Today really showed me a lot and should give our team a lot of confidence as we continue through non-conference play and eventually into the conference portion of our season."
 
In singles, Troy took wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5, but Samford won on the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 courts, giving the Bulldogs the 4-3 win. At No. 2 singles, Nicholls defeated Carles Anton, 7-5, 6-1. On the No. 4 singles court, J.B. Pickard earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ambrosio. At No. 6 singles, Sebastian Harrison defeated Nicolas Simkin, 6-1, 6-3.
 
Samford will next play at Alabama State on Saturday, Feb. 10. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start from Montgomery, Ala.
