BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford junior midfielder Hanna Rae Himes scored a goal in the 89^th minute to lift the Bulldog soccer team to a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro in the regular-season finale for both teams Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
 
With the win, Samford is now 9-6-3 overall and 6-1-2 in Southern Conference play. Samford finished second in the SoCon regular season standings, earning the No. 2 seed in next week's SoCon Tournament and the right to host its half of the quarterfinals and semifinals of the tournament. UNCG fell to 4-8-5 overall and 3-3-3 in SoCon play. UNCG will now host The Citadel in the first round of the SoCon Tournament on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to play at Samford.
 
"We've played Greensboro a lot and I can't remember too many that aren't one-goal games," Samford head coach Todd Yelton said. "They're very well coached. Stef does a great job. It was a hot day and both teams were playing for something. I'm just proud of the kids. We played a lot of kids today to deal with the weather and they handled it extremely well."
 
Samford got the scoring started early in the second half when Layton Glisson scored off an assist from Whitaker Buchanan in the 47^th minute of the game for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. UNCG's Merle Greulich knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal on a penalty kick in the 82^nd minute. Himes found the back of the net in the 89^th minute off an assist from Alex Parr to give Samford the victory.
 
As a team in the game, Samford had 21 shots, to just eight for UNCG. The Bulldogs had nine corner kicks, compared to three for the Spartans.
 
Samford will open the SoCon Tournament against the UNCG-The Citadel winner on Friday at 4 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field.
