BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford senior
Layton Glisson scored a goal with 22 seconds left to lift the Bulldog soccer team to a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament Friday evening at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the win, Samford improved its record to 10-6-3, and the Bulldogs advanced to Sunday's semifinal round where Samford will take on the winner of the Furman-ETSU game at 1 p.m. UNCG's season ends with a mark of 5-9-5.
The teams played through a scoreless first half. Both teams had chances to score, but neither could get a ball across the line.
UNC Greensboro broke the scoreless tie when Rachel Poplin scored off an assist from Ava Kiss in the 80
th minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. In the 85
th minute, Samford's
Maison Wells scored off an assist from Glisson to knot the score at 1-1. Glisson then scored an unassisted goal in the 90
th minute to give Samford the 2-1 victory.
As a team, Samford had 23 shots, to 17 for UNCG. The Spartans had four corner kicks to two for the Bulldogs.
Samford's semifinal game in the SoCon Tournament is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Shauna Yelton Field. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
