BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team has been selected to take on the No. 1 seeded Florida State Seminoles in the first round of the NCAA Tournament when the bracket was released Monday afternoon.
The game will be played on Friday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m. (CT).
"It's going to be so exciting," Samford senior defender
Ella Simpson said. "Even as a defender, it's going to be so exciting to get the opportunity to go against some of the best forwards in the nation. It's just a great way to put Samford on the map."
This marks Samford's eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, having previously earned bids in 2005, 2007, 2011, 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2022. Samford advanced past the first round in both 2005 and 2021. The Bulldogs earned the bid to the NCAA Tournament with their 1-0 win at Western Carolina in the Southern Conference Tournament championship game on Sunday.
The team gathered together, along with Samford staff and supporters in the Coca-Cola Hospitality Suite in the Pete Hanna Center to watch the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Monday.
"It's really cool, being in this position two times prior," senior
Caroline Donovan, who was named the SoCon Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, said. "It's always a fun time getting in here and watching the selection show and seeing our name up there. Seeing Florida State is a big name, so it will be a big game, and it will be fun to experience."
Samford and Florida State have met four times previously, with FSU winning all four meetings. The last time the teams played came in 2019. This will mark the second time the teams have played in the NCAA Tournament, with the previous meeting coming in 2011.
