BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team dropped a 79-65 decision to Tennessee Tech Tuesday afternoon in the Pete Hanna Center.
With the loss Samford fell to 2-6 on the young season. Tennessee Tech improved its record to 5-2 with the win.
Samford was led in the loss by
Emily Bowman with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Kennedy Langham had a team-high 18 points, while
Sadie Stetson followed with 11 points.
For Tennessee Tech, Peyton Carter led the way with 20 points. Anna Walker, Reghan Grimes and Taris Thornton tallied 14 points each for the Golden Eagles.
With Tennessee Tech leading, 3-2, the Golden Eagles went on a 15-0 run to push its lead to 18-2 with 5:41 to go in the first quarter following a layup by Grimes. Samford fought back to cut the lead to 22-11 with 2:33 left in the opening period after a layup by
Sierra Godbolt. Tennessee Tech led, 24-11 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, with Tennessee Tech leading, 28-17, Samford went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 28-25 with 4:34 left in the period after a free throw by Langham. Tennessee Tech scored the next four points to push the lead out to 32-25. Samford then went on an 8-0 run to take a 33-32 lead with 30 seconds left before halftime after a free throw by Langham. The teams went into the locker room at halftime tied at 33-33.
Tennessee Tech opened the third quarter with a 15-2 run to take a 48-35 lead at the 4:37 mark in the period after a three-pointer by Thornton. Samford fought back to cut the lead to seven points at 53-46 after a layup by
Claire Johnson with 51 seconds left in the third quarter. Tennessee Tech held a 56-48 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Golden Eagles pushed their lead out to 15 points at 66-51 with 7:05 to go after a three-pointer by Carter. Samford cut the lead to nine points at 66-57 after a three-pointer by
Kylee Lewandowski at the 4:44 mark in the fourth period. Tennessee Tech pushed the lead out to 16 points at 75-59 with 1:59 to go after a pair of free throws by Carter. Tennessee Tech finished with the 79-65 win.
Samford will next take part in the North Florida MTE in Jacksonville, Fla. The Bulldogs will take on Stephen F. Austin Friday at 2:30 p.m., and North Florida Saturday at 12 p.m.
