Women’s Basketball Opens Season With Loss At Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Samford women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season with a 101-53 loss at national power Tennessee Tuesday evening at Thompson-Boling Arena.
 
Samford (0-1) was led in scoring by freshman Claire Johnson, scoring 13 points in her collegiate debut. Emily Bowman posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kennedy Langham also had 12 points, while Annie Ramil added 11 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
 
For Tennessee (1-0), Zee Spearman had 25 points and six rebounds. Talaysia Cooper scored 19 points, while Jewel Spear added 18 points and six rebounds.
 
Samford took an early 7-5 lead with 8:14 to go in the first quarter after a layup by Ramil. Tennessee answered with a 12-1 run to take a 17-8 lead at the 4:14 mark in the first period after a pair of free throws by Ruby Whitehorn. Samford fought back to cut the lead to five at 17-12 with 3:15 left in the first quarter following two free throws from Johnson. The Lady Vols built the lead to nine points at 26-17 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Tennessee scored the first 19 points of the second quarter to push its lead to 44-17 with 3:48 to go in the second quarter after a layup by Whitehorn. The Lady Vols took a 49-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
Tennessee opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run to increase its lead to 59-26 with 6:39 left in the period following a layup by Cooper. Samford cut the lead to 61-34 after a three-pointer by Johnson at the 5:03 mark in the third period. Tennessee stretched its lead to 36 points at 78-42 at the end of the third quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, Tennessee led by as many as 49 points. The Lady Vols took the game by a final score of 101-53.
 
Samford will play at Central Arkansas on Friday, Nov. 8. The game is set for an 11 a.m. start from Conway Ark.
