HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Samford men's basketball team finished up the non-conference portion of the schedule and their final game of the 2024 calendar year today as they faced Alabama A&M on the road. Points were available from both sides as Samford led the majority of the afternoon and came away with the 97-90 victory. The win moves Samford's record to 10-3 on the season as they move toward SoCon play.
Today's game had a familiar look to it for Samford fans, as
Trey Fort put on a repeat performance of what he did at South Carolina State a couple of weeks ago. The Bulldog guard caught fire right from the jump as he connected on his first three shots from three, and scored 18 points in the opening 12 minutes of play.
Samford shot 63 percent from the floor overall and connected on 9-of-17 attempts from deep. The lone mark on the Dogs offense was 10 turnovers in the first half. To go along with Fort's 20 points in the first half, leading scorer
Jaden Brownell as well as
Julian Brown scored eight points. Samford led the home side 55-46 in a high-scoring opening half.
The Samford lead fluctuated between single and double-digits in the second half, but the Bulldogs offense always seemed to have an answer for any run from the home side. The main man for Samford in the second half was
Collin Holloway who scored all 16 of his points in the second half. He was 4-of-5 from the floor, connected on both of his threes, and was six of six from the line on the night.
Fort went on to score seven points in the second half, on his way to a career-high 27-point performance while five different Bulldogs finished in double figures.
Lukas Walls provided another strong game off the bench, doing a little bit of everything with seven points, four rebounds, and four assists. Point guard
Rylan Jones got in double-figures with 13 points and added five assists.
After coming off a disappointing performance in their last outing at Arizona, the Bulldogs bounced back well today to finish 10-3 in the non-conference portion of their schedule.
When Samford returns from their Christmas break, they will prepare for a home game against The Citadel on Jan. 1 at the Pete Hanna Center. They are 5-6 overall on the year and will be playing their first conference game of the season.
