Bulldogs Stumble In Saturday Doubleheader At Trojan Invitational

TROY, Ala. – The first Saturday of the 2024 season saw the Samford softball team fall in a pair of games by scores of 8-0 to the North Alabama Lions and 6-5 in eight innings to the Troy Trojans.

With the pair of losses, Samford drops to 0-4 on the young season. North Alabama moved to 4-0 on the year and Troy improved to 2-2 after topping the Bulldogs on Saturday.

In game one, the Samford quartet of Linsey Hargis, Katie Campbell, Ansley Yantis and Olivia Shaw were the only Bulldogs batters that recorded a base hit.

Sophomore Sara Bond was handed the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. In relief, McKenzie Newcomb tossed 2.2 innings and allowed three more runs.

North Alabama opened the scoring with a run in the second and two more in the third before scoring a pair in the fifth and three more in the seventh for the 8-0 final.

In the heartbreaking nightcap, five different Bulldogs tallied a base knock for the Samford offense. The biggest swing of the evenig came in the top of the second when Grier Bruce slugged a no-doubt home run over the head of Troy's left fielder to score Hargis and give Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead.

Troy answered in the bottom of the third by plating three two-out runs giving the homestanding Trojans a one-run advantage after the opening three innings.

After back-to-back quiet innings, the dramatics returned in the top of the sixth when Samford Yantis scored from second on a Troy error to tie the game at 3-all after reaching base on a fielder's choice.

A relatively tame seventh inning gave way to extras. In the first frame of free softball, Hargis was placed on second base to start the inning before Bruce worked a leadoff walk in the top of the eighth. Both Bulldogs came around to score three batters later when Campbell poked the first pitch of her at-bat into centerfield giving Samford a 5-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Troy worked a leadoff walk and then followed it up with a single that led to a Samford throwing error that tied the game.

One batter later, an infield single gave Troy the 6-5 extra-innings win.

Jordyn Partain pitched a complete game and fanned seven Trojans in the Saturday night. The junior allowed three earned runs over her 7.1-inning outing.
